Every child deserves a place where they can fit in. For children with heart defects, finding that place can be tough. Camp Bon Coeur is a place where kids can grow, have fun, challenge themselves and make friends and memories that last a lifetime.

Camp Bon Coeur offers many sports-related activities that are tailored to meet the needs of our campers.

Campers love to throw on a swimsuit and escape Louisiana’s summer temperatures. At the pool, our campers learn the pool rules, fundamentals of swimming and basic rescue techniques. But after the learning takes place, you will find the campers playing water games and competing with others to see who can pick up the most rings off the pool floor. Our Red Cross trained pool staff combines education and excitement to make the pool one of the most popular locations at Camp Bon Coeur!

Campers love playing floor hockey, volleyball and other non-contact sports in our air-conditioned gym. Sports Instructors keep the spirit and the activity of the campers high during the time in the gym. A camp highlight is the annual “Camper-Counselor Wiffle Ball Game”. This year, the campers took the trophy in a very convincing win!

Campers have many opportunities to express themselves at
Camp Bon Coeur!

In Art Class, campers learn to make things like soap, birdhouses, and jewelry. The art staff keeps things upbeat and fun by inspiring the campers to try new techniques and develop new skills. It is not unusual for our staff to leave the art room covered in paint, glitter and feathers from spending time creating artwork that is ready for public display (even if the public is just other campers and staff!).

Heart Class teaches about the heart!

At Camp Bon Coeur, the campers not only experience the summer camp activities that are found at other summer camps, but we also offer a heart class. In heart class, our nurses educate the kids about their personal heart problems. This class also gives the campers a chance to share their personal stories about growing up with a heart condition. At the end of the class, the campers have the chance to learn “hands on” by helping to dissect a cow’s heart and lungs!

Our Evening Programs are a camp favorite!

Each night, Camp Bon Coeur has a planned evening activity. Our campers and staff come together to take part in the all-camp activities at night! Some of our beloved events are the Camper-Counselor Wiffle Ball Game, the Reverse Scavenger Hunt and the Counselor Hunt!!

Each session puts on a talent show where the campers and staff can show off their skills, humor or acting ability. The staff and campers create and perform skits that keep everyone laughing out loud! The camp nurses are not even immune to getting onstage and performing for the rest of camp.

The Closing Banquet

At Camp Bon Coeur, many things are steeped in tradition. One tradition that was started recently is the closing banquet. At this final meal, our outrageously costumed staff waits on the graduating campers and the campers that are moving up from Session A to Session B. The campers always find it amusing watching their favorite counselor make fools of themselves.

Other Activities (yes, there are more!)

Traditionally, each session goes on a Field Trip to an area attraction. This past summer, our campers enjoyed bowling at Lafayette Lanes and making pottery at Pottery Alley. Each trip is topped off by a trip to grab a quick snowball. They are a welcome treat after a long Louisiana day!

Camp Contests

Campers are urged to keep their rooms clean and tidy (especially after they return from the barn and the lake!). A clean room contest is held daily by an independent, outside judge (the Administrative Staff). The cleanest room receives the coveted Golden Toilet Seat! The room with the most dust dinosaurs and surfin’ sheets get the unwanted Golden Broom. They get to help clean the cafeteria! The cabin that wins the Golden Toilet Seat the most often gets to sign it and leave their mark at Camp Bon Coeur forever!

The Spirit Stick is awarded to the unit that demonstrates the most spirit (and coincidentally for the staff, the most hearing loss). Camp units sing songs, lead cheers and chant their unit names! The sounds of the children singing can be heard throughout camp! Units have been known to paint their unit names on their faces and become creative in re-writing camp songs!

The spirit, excitement and fun levels at Camp Bon Coeur are off the charts! One summer at Camp Bon Coeur and the memories will live in your heart for a lifetime!!
